Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps to synchronize a project in Final Cut Pro X.
- In Final Cut Pro X, create a project in the usual way.
- Add the clips from one recording device (camera or audio recorder) to the primary storyline.
- For each additional device, add its video or audio clips to a lane above or below the primary storyline, one lane per device
- (Optional, but recommended) If one device has several clips, select them in the timeline and group them as a secondary storyline. This can help keep the clips organized in the synced project.
- Go to the Project Library, make sure that the project to be synced is selected, and choose File > Export XML....
- Start the PluralEyes for Final Cut Pro application. (It is a standalone application, not a plug-in.)
- Press the File... button and select the .fcpxml file that was exported in step #5.
- Select the desired sync options by pressing the Change... button.
- Press the Sync button.
- When the sync is complete, if Final Cut Pro X is running, the synced project will be opened in it. In any case, PluralEyes will create a synced version of the .fcpxml file next to the original one and this can be imported at any time into FCP X by the menu item File > Import > XML....
- PluralEyes also creates a new event with the name <project> mc. Inside this event is multicam clip that can be used with the FCP X angle editor and viewer.
Sync Options
- Choose Clips are in chronological order (if they are).
- Use multiprocessing (unless PluralEyes is hogging too much of the computer and is slowing down your other applications too much).
- If the audio varies a lot between the clips, choose the Level Audio option. PluralEyes will do some extra processing to compensate. The results are almost always better but it takes a little longer. Note that this option is not for the case where one clip is simply louder than another. That is common and it doesn't bother PluralEyes. This option helps in the less common case where the two clips are loud and quiet in opposite locations.
- If you don't have too many clips, try the Try Really Hard option. This tells PluralEyes to do some extra processing. It can often resolve difficult sync situations but it can take a long time, especially if there are a lot of clips that do not sync with each other. But if you don't mind waiting, try it out.
- Replace audio: You can choose this option if your project has one camera and one external audio source. PluralEyes will create a new event containing the synced clips where the camera audio has been replaced by the external audio. The event is named <project> synced.
